Abnormal uterine bleeding

What is abnormal uterine bleeding?
Abnormal menstrual bleeding is the most common gynecological concern and condition we see in our patients.

At Emory Women Clinic we can help you identify if your menstrual bleeding is considered abnormal, if it needs evaluation, or if you can benefit from treatment. Many women with heavy menstrual periods don't know if the flow is normal or heavy enough to be concerned. Here are some guidelines that can help you decide if your bleeding is abnormal.

Bleeding is too heavy when:

  • Bleeding lasts more than 7-8 days

  • Bleeding soaks through one or more tampons or pads per hour

  • You need to use two tampons or sanitary pads to control the flow

  • You bleed on your clothes

  • You need to change your pads or tampons overnight.

  • Eliminate blood clots

  • Irregular or unpredictable and painful bleeding episodes.

What can you do about heavy bleeding?

At Emory Women Clinic, we encourage women to come in for consultation if they are concerned about their menstrual bleeding.

Heavy menstrual bleeding affects more than just your quality of life. It can have significant medical implications and can sometimes be caused by conditions such as fibroids, polyps, precancerous changes, or uterine cancer.

Treatment options for heavy menstrual bleeding

Your Emory Women Clinic gynecologist will provide you with a thorough evaluation to identify the causes of your heavy bleeding and can then recommend the best treatment option. Treatments vary depending on the cause and severity of symptoms.

Treatments include:

  • Hormonal medical management with pills or IUD

  • Medical management with pills to help decrease bleeding.

  • Office procedures such as hysteroscopy, curettage, or endometrial ablation

  • Surgical procedures, if necessary, for certain conditions.

If you experience heavy menstrual bleeding, especially if you also have dizziness, fatigue, lightheadedness during your cycle, or have other medical conditions, call our clinic to schedule a consultation at 442 195 98 96.
